Inaugural MBS Pool Evening

On Wednesday 11th September, Backyard Pub in Sri Hartamas opened its doors to the inaugural MBS Pool Evening. 30+ MBS members, friends and supporters signed up, and what a fun evening we all had!

With only two pool tables, and in the interests of time, we decided on a ‘one frame only’ format with the winner moving on to the next round. Our fantastic MBS supporter Y.A.M Tunku Naquiyuddin kindly drew the names from the hat, and then the matches got under way.

Most of the first round matches started off quite tentatively, as it took some time for everyone to get used to the format, tables and importantly the rules, but when things got going, there was a ‘free flow’ of excellent shots, skill and camaraderie on the tables, with Backyard’s own pool referee watching closely. In an attempt to get a competitive edge, a few players resorted to psychological tactics, luring opponents into a false sense of security by suggesting they had either “never played before”, or “not played in years”, yet clearing the table with great positioning and precision!

While all the matches were progressing, Backyard’s resident band kept everyone entertained with a variety of rock and roll classics with truly amazing guitar and singing solos….some MBS members even joining the band on stage!

Around 11.30pm, and after nearly five hours of many exciting matches, the best of three final was played out between Mark Simmons and Chris Crowe in what turned out to be a really close and tense contest. Level at one frame all, in the deciding frame it took an amazing shot by Chris to take the inaugural MBS Pool title and the Gold Medal with Mark taking the Silver.

The MBS would like to thank our Royal supporter Tunku Naquiyuddin (who said he had never played pool before!), all the participants, supporters, friends, food sponsors and committee members, and finally the owners and staff of Backyard who all helped the MBS to deliver an excellent night of fun and friendship. Such was the success of the evening, the MBS committee will definitely organise another pool event in the near future!
